Instructions for writers

When writing an article for the Periodiek, it is advantageous for both us and yourself that everything goes smoothly. To that end, below we have listed a number of important points to take into account.

Target audience

The Periodiek is a periodical that is primarily aimed at students in Physics, Astronomy, Mathematics and Computer Science. Next to these, we also have a large number of readers that have already graduated, some of whom are part of the staff of the aforementioned studies. With such a wide target audience, it is important to ensure that each edition features a balanced set of articles, not just when looking at the fields of study, but also in such a fashion that everyone, from freshman to staff member, can find something to their liking. The editors are eager to assist you in fine-tuning this last aspect.

Size

A page containing only text contains on average 600 words. The first page usually starts with a title and a short, introductory sections, and thus contains on average 500 words. If images are included on the page, the amount of words of course reduces.

Turing in the article

We prefer to receive the final article as plain text, with maybe /italic/ for emphasis. Mathematical articles with formulas are preferably received in LaTeX. With regards to images, we would like to remind you that the printed page has a higher resolution than most computer screens and thus we need images and photo’s in high resolution: at least 120 pixels per centimeter (300 dpi). An full-page image is thus about 2000 by 2800 pixels. This obviously does not matter for vector images.

The editorial process

After sending in the article, it goes through an edit process by the editors. The main point is not just a proper use of language, but also continuity with the rest of the magazine, and, as mentioned earlier, the editors monitor the appropriateness of the article with regards to our target audience. For example, it could be that a minor change to the article greatly increases the clarity of the article to a part of our readership. After the editorial process, the article is send back to you for approval.
